What Is Welding?

What Is Welding: First Of All, Let’s See What Is Welding? Simply Put, It Is The Art Of Joining Metals Together. A Welder Uses High Current : To Join Various Rods Or Metals, Causing The Metal To Become Heated, Melt, Cool, And Join Together In The Same Way That A Carpenter Uses Nails And Glue To Join Wood. Welding Is A Fabrication Method Primarily Used To Join Metals Or Thermoplastics, Typically Done By Melting The Metal Parts Together. In Welding, The Metals Are Melted Together To Form A Bond That Cools To Form A Strong, Unbreakable Joint.

Types Of Welding

Types Of Welding:- What Are The Different Types Of Welding And What Are They Used For? If You Are Confused About The Different Types Of Welding, Then Let Me Tell You About Its Types:-

1. Stick Welding

Despite The Fact That TIG Welding And MIG Welding Are In Fact Arc Welding Processes, Stick Welding Is Frequently Referred To As Arc Welding. But Arc Welding Is What Most People Still Call Stick Welding. Stick Welding Is The Old-School Kind Of Welding That Grandpa Used To Do In The Barn To Fix His Tractor.

It Uses A Stick Electrode Like A Welding Rod That Is Mounted In An Electrode Holder That Looks Like A Battery Jumper Cable Clamp. The Rod Is Struck With A Match To Start The Arc And The Stick Is Dropped Into The Puddle Once It Is Lit. Stick Welding Is Very Simple And A Stick Welding Machine Is Very Easy To Use And Quite Inexpensive.

2. MIG Welding

MIG Welding Is Considered One Of The Easiest Types Of Welding To Learn. Because There Is No Need To Feed The Rod As It Is Short Like Stick Welding. A Wire Is Fed Through The Cable And Out The End Of The MIG Welding Gun And All The Operator Needs To Do Is Pull The Trigger And Weld. Sounds Easy Right? Well It Is Not That Easy. It Is A Little Easier To Learn Than Stick Welding But Only A Little. MIG Welding Actually Describes 2 Types Of Welding… Bare Wire MIG, And Flux Core Welding.

While Flux Core Is Simpler To Use Outside And Doesn’t Require A Cylinder Of MIG Welding Gas Or A Flow Meter, Bare Wire MIG Is Cleaner And Can Weld Thinner Metal. Flux Core Welding Is Typically Used For Either Inexpensive Hobby Welders Where The Buyer Does Not Want To Spend The Money For Gas And Gas Conversion Kits, Or For Really Heavy Duty Applications Such As Earth Moving Equipment And Heavy Production Welding.

3. TIG Welding

TIG Welding Is Considered One Of The More Difficult Types Of Welding To Learn… It Is Harder To Handle Than MIG Or Stick Welding. This Is Because Both Hands Are Needed To Make The Weld. The Tungsten Electrode Of A TIG Torch Serves As The Source Of Heat And Arc, And The Rod Is Fed By The Other Hand. TIG Welding Equipment Is Usually More Expensive And More Difficult To Set Up Because It Often Includes A Remote Amperage Foot Pedal And It Takes A Cylinder Of Argon Or Argon Mix Shielding Gas To Work. TIG Welding Is The Most Versatile Type Of Welding Of All. Virtually All Conventional Metals Can Be Welded With The TIG Process.

Carbon And Low Alloy Steels, Stainless Steel, Nickel Alloys, Aluminum, Magnesium, Titanium, Cobalt, And Copper Alloys Can Be Welded Using This Type Of Welding. And Many Industries Prefer To Use TIG Welding In Their Plants.

4. Plasma Arc Welding

Plasma Arc Welding Is Similar To TIG Welding, Except That A Tungsten Electrode Is Placed Inside The Nozzle And Heat Is Produced By Ionized Gases Flowing Around The Arc . Plasma Arc Welding Is Used Where High Precision Is Required.

And In Situations Where A Blank Electrode Is Advantageous. Plasma Arc Welding Is Used Extensively In Aerospace Applications For Dimensional Restoration Of Air Seals And Repair Of Jet Engine Blades, Where Thicknesses Are Often Less Than .015 In And Amperages Used Are Often Single Digit.

5. Gas Welding

Gas Welding Is One Of The Old School Types Of Welding. Oxygen And Acetylene Is The Most Popular Setup For Gas Welding Kits And Gas Welding Is Still Used For Automotive Exhaust Applications, As Well As For Airplane Fuselages, Welding 4130 Chromoly Tubing, And For Repairing Homebuilt Airplanes.

Gas Welding Is Portable And It Is Quite Versatile… There Are Still Some People Who Consider Gas Welding To Be The Best Even For Aluminum Welding. But Some People Believe That TIG Welding Is Much Better Than Gas Welding. I Am One Of Those People. TIG Welding Is Mostly Used In Oil & Gas Industries.

6. Electron Beam And Laser Welding

These Types Of Welding Are Considered High Energy Welding Processes Because They Provide A Greater Amount Of Heat Than Older More Traditional Types Of Welding. Electron Beam Welding Can Penetrate Up To 6 Inches Of Steel Without Any Bevel.

Laser Welding Can Pinpoint Heat So Precisely That Weld Metal Can Be Deposited Onto The Tool Steel Injection Mold Cavity Eliminating Heat Treatment And Requiring Only Minimal Machining To Restore Dimensions.

You Have Understood Welding Kya Hai? And Types Of Welding Above, Now We Will Tell You About Hazards Of Welding And Its Risk Control Which Is Very Important.

Hazards And Risk Of Welding And Precautions

It Is Crucial To Be Aware Of Welding’s Dangers In Addition To Welding Kya Hai And Its Various Types. One Of The Industries Where A Lot Of Work-Related Injuries Have Been Reported Is Welding. There Are Many Hazards And Risks Associated With Welding And Each Can Have Long-Term Effects On Workers. Fire Hazards During Welding Activity And At Welding Sites Are Also Known.

Welding Is A Very Difficult And Dangerous Profession From The Safety Point Of View So It Is Important For Every Welder To Ensure That They Follow The General Safety Guidelines. You Will Be Able To Ensure Not Only Your Own Safety But Also The Safety Of Those Around You In This Manner. A Welder Will Be Exposed To A Variety Of Hazards As Part Of The Normal Performance Of His Work. Here We Are Listing Some Of The Hazards You May Encounter So That You Can Understand How You Can Avoid Them:-

1. Electric Shock

Most Welders Have To Deal With Some Type Of Electrical Shock While Welding. Although You Can Take Precautions To Keep Yourself As Safe As Possible, It Can Still Happen Even If You Are Careful.

What To Do: Make Sure You Weld In An Area Free Of Outlets That Aren’t Working And Aren’t Wet. Use Gloves Where Practical When You Are Using The Torch And Make Sure You Are Grounded By Standing On Rubber Or Wearing Shock Resistant Shoes. Never Touch Electrical Parts, Including Electrodes, With Your Bare Hands.

2. Flying Particles, Fumes and Gases

Due To The Nature Of The Way The Welding Process Works, Most Welding Produces Harmful Gases, Fumes And Toxic Fumes. And This Is Present In All Types Of Welding. The Melting Of Metals During Welding Produces Fumes And Gases That Can Cause Breathing Problems To People Nearby And Can Damage The Lungs.

What To Do: Make Sure The Area Where You Will Be Working Is Well Ventilated And Make Sure You Weld In An Open Space. Confined Areas Make It Easier To Inhale Fumes And Gases, Which Can Cause Discomfort To The Welder.

3. Welding Sparks

Welding Sparks Pose A Fire Hazard, But They Are A Necessary Part Of The Job Because It Is The Nature Of The Welding Torch To Produce A Spark When It Strikes Metal.

What To Do:  Make Sure You Weld In An Area That Is Free From Debris Or Burning Materials That Could Cause A Fire. Keep A Fire Extinguisher Nearby. Wear Clothing That Is Fire Resistant (Apron), And Do Not Weld Around Containers That Contain Flammable Materials.

4. Arc Rays

In Arc Welding, Arc Rays Can Actually Burn The Welder’s Eyes And Skin If They Come Close To Them. It Is A Good Idea To Make Sure You Wear Safety Equipment ( PPE ) For Any Of These Tasks.

What To Do: Make Sure You Have A Comfortable Welding Shield And Always Use A Welding Shield And Helmet While Welding. Make Sure The Clothes You Wear Are Fire Resistant And Can Protect Your Skin. Also, If You Are Working Around Others, Make Sure To Put A Non-Flammable Shield (Fire Blanketing) In The Area You Are Working In.

5. Fire & Explosions

Arc Welding Creates A High Temperature That Poses A Potential Risk Of Fire And Explosion. Having Said That, The Real Danger Is Not Just The Arc But The Sparks, Splashes And Heat Generated During Welding. You Should Remove Flammable Materials From The Workplace Before Welding Or If Removal Is Not Possible, Cover It Well With A Fire Resistant Blanket.

Note: If Welding Work Is To Be Done In A Highly Flammable Zone, Ensure That A Fire Extinguisher And Fire Watch (Who Can Watch For Fire Or Explosion And Contact Emergency In Case Of A Fire Emergency) Are Present.

6. Insufficient PPE

Workers In The Welding Industry Can Avoid Burns, Injuries, And Arc Ray Exposure Thanks To Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The Right Protective Equipment And Safety Clothing Not Only Allows Workers To Move Freely But Also Provides Adequate Protection Against The Risks Associated With Welding.

Flame Resistant And Welding Apron, Nomex Coverall Are Recommended For Welders. Safety Data Sheets, Procedures, And Safety Information Provided By The Manufacturer Should Be Carefully Reviewed By Workers Who Are Exposed To Dangerous Workplace Hazards.
